Government statistics on successful appeals against criminal conviction show that in the decade 1989-1999, for example, the appeal (Criminal Division) overthrew over 8,470 criminal convictions — an average of 847 a year. Moreover, the Crown Courts quash around 3,500 criminal convictions obtained in the magistrates' courts each year.
